Lothians
RAYNET have assisted with many sporting events in
and around Edinburgh over the years. Here we are
supporting the First Aid team during a Fun Run
round Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park.

down the hill at some terrifying speeds. They all
made the turn at the bottom; all except one that

One
rider took a tumble close to Kirk Gate, the
location of one of the Lothians RAYNET operators
- me, GM0AXY. The First Aid team was called to
provide assistance. After a bit of bandaging of
scratches and bruises the rider was back in the
race none the worse for his experience. |

During
the first full weekend in July 2002 Lothians
Raynet assisted the Scottish Endurance Riding
Club during their 2-day meet at Broughton in The
Scottish Borders. The distances covered by the
riders and horses according to class, were 15, 20
or 30 miles on each of the two days. The terrain
was partly open rolling farming country with hill
grazing and partly forest. The area to be covered
was some 8 x 3 miles with some hills going up to
over 500 metres altitude within the area of the
course.
In order to provide radio safety cover over the
whole of the course, it was decided that we would
need someone to act as a relay station located on
or near the top of one of the local hills. As
luck would have it Charlie, GM6MUZ, drew the
short straw, or did he really volunteer for that
hike up the hill? He and his XYL - Alason set up
a relay station in atrocious weather conditions;
wet and windy with poor visibilty; on top of
Trahenna Hill having carried up tent and
equipment sufficient to sustain them for a day in
the hills.

Scottish
Endurance Riding Championship - 2002
During the 2nd weekend of
August 2002 the Scottish Endurance Riding
Championship was held at Kindrummond near Dorres,
a few miles south of Inverness. Raynet operators
from a number of groups came together for this 2-day
event; Inverness, Grampian, Tayside, Fife,
Strathclyde and Lothians groups were represented.
The slightly different styles of operating soon
converged, and everyone got into the swing of
tracking the riders through all the checkpoints.

Here
is Alex - GM6OGN (Lothians) looking after some of
the paperwork while John - GM0OTI (Controller of
Inverness Raynet) is having a stint at operating
the Control Station at the venue Start/Finish. We
had the benefit of a porta-cabin to establish
Control in - made a big difference particularly
in view of the weather. |
The

Loch Ness can be seen in the background. The
weather was mixed, and the farmer's large 4-wheel
drive tractor came in handy for pulling
horseboxes out of the wet, and in parts muddy,
field at the end of the event! |
