Wester Ross - 2004

Freedom to Roam

Some Links
A few days off in early August saw us heading north-west towards Poolewe in Wester Ross.

Pit stop on-route to Poolewe

On-route we made an overnight stop near Inverness before heading further west. We passed through some areas with spectacular scenery such as here on the A832 to the south of Loch Broom which you can see in the far distance looking north.

View from GM/WS-337 looking south-east

The following day, a Sunday, we cycled north along the western shore of Loch Ewe as far as we could before chaining the bikes to an old abandoned tractor, and then heading up the slopes towards An Cuaidh,  SOTA Ref. GM/WS-337. It is only a 1-pointer, and it was a long slog across very boggy terrain. Here I am taking in the views to the south and south-east back towards Poolewe while operating on 5 MHz.

Christine back at the campsite in Poolewe

Back at the campsite in Poolewe Christine insisted on putting her feet in a tub of warm water to ease the aches and pains after the long slog back to camp.

The following day we headed along the A832 south and then up over the hill towards Gairloch until we came to the footpath heading towards Slattadale on Loch Maree. This footpath goes within a couple of kilometres of another SOTA hill; GM/WS324 Meall an Doirein. There is however,  no footpath going up to the summit. It was just a scramble across very rough terrain.

Footpath betwwen A832 and Slattadale on Loch Maree

The path between the A832 and Slattadale was very good

View north from Meall an Doirein towards Poolewe

The view north from WS-324. In the distance is Loch Ewe.
On the way back from Poolewe we had intended to do at least one summit in the Glenmore / Loch Morlich area, but the weather closed in with low clouds and drizzly rain so we had to be content with some long walks at lower levels around the loch. We shall be back there though!
